MAINTENANCE GUIDE FOR PERMEABLE INTERLOCKING PAVERS

Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavements (PICP) are a proven method for reducing stormwater runoff and pollutants, while supporting pedestrian and vehicular traffic. These discoveries are backed by countless studies by universities, government stormwater agencies, and the industry and provide cost-saving benefits.

Like all stormwater control measures, PICP requires maintenance as it traps sediment on its surface similar to air conditioning filters. Larger particles are initially trapped while allowing water to pass. Some enter the jointing stone and become trapped. The jointing stone with larger particles eventually capture smaller particles which decreases the infiltration rate over time.

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has published information supporting PICP use in walkways, plazas, driveways, parking lots, alleys and streets.

PERMEABLE MODULAR BLOCK PAVERS (MBP)

Pedestal paving systems elevate tiles and pavers on uniformly spaced pedestals to allow healthy airflow, heat reduction and drainage to rooftop and ground applications.

The multiple MBP sections throughout a project serve a critical role in the drainage systems. These systems provide storage and important water quality benefits.

Proper and routine maintenance is critical in providing lasting performance and integrity of the system. Commitment to frequent maintenance reduces the risk of extreme repair/replacement due to clogged drainage pipes or other functional failures.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

AFTER – joints freed of debris & replenished with filter material

ACTION: Inspection
FREQUENCY: Annually
OBJECTIVE: Inspect the pavement condition and observe infiltration either during a rain event or with a garden hose to ensure that water infiltrates into the surface.

ACTION: Snow Removal
FREQUENCY: As necessary
OBJECTIVE: DO NOT apply sand to the MBP surface. Mechanical snow and ice removal should be used.

ACTION: Debris removal, sweeping and vacuuming
FREQUENCY: As necessary – Frequency depends on use case (e.g. foot traffic v. vehicle traffic), patterns, and specific site conditions (e.g. tributary basin).
OBJECTIVE: Use a regenerative air or vacuum sweeper to maintain infiltration rates. Replace infill aggregate as needed.

ACTION: Full & partial pavement replacement or infill material
FREQUENCY: Annual inspection of hydraulic and structural facilities. Inspect for obvious problems during maintenance visits, especially for plugging of outlets.
OBJECTIVE: Restore infiltration in the event of surface clogs by removing the first 1/2 to 1 inch of soiled aggregate in fill material with a vacuum seeper. Refill the openings with clean aggregate infill materials.
